Description

NGC 7380, the Wizard Nebula, in Cepheus. NGC 7380 is an HII region and young open cluster about 2.6 kpc away. At the center of the cluster lies a close binary called DH Cephei consisting of two O stars with a total mass between ~ 40 and 60 solar masses. Although the binary is detached, with a 2.1 d orbital period they have nontrivial tidal distortions and produce X-rays, likely due to colliding winds.

This is my first attempt at combining Halpha, OIII, and RGB data. First separately combined HOO and RGB into two files with Photoshop. With the HOO file, rescaled the Halpha by 56% to account for shorter exposure compared to the OIII image. Then used the Channel Mixer to replace the green channel with 80% OIII+20% Ha and the blue channel with 85% OIII+15% Ha. Then processed normally (stretching, AstroFlat, local contrast, sharpening, noise reduction, etc.). Processed the RGB file normally, increasing star color several times and reducing the stars a couple of times. Composited with the processed HOO file, using the RGB as a 50% hue contribution, and tweaked color balance and curves. Did some final tweaks to shadows, sharpening, and noise reduction in Photoshop Elements.
